These are so pretty and much easier than cutout cookies. With the invention of the refrigerator in the 1930s, these cookies became popular and were considered an improvement over cutout cookies.
Ingredients: |

3 cups sugar

Directions: |
Beat butter in a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add sugar, cream of tartar, and salt; beat until combined. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in enough remaining flour to make a stiff dough, using a wooden spoon. Divide dough into thirds. Shape dough into logs about 1 1/2 inches in diameter and 9 inches long. Wrap the logs and chill for 1 to 3 hours or until firm.

Cut rolls into 1/4 inch thick slices. Place slices 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with colored sugar and other decorations, if desired.

Bake in a 375* oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until bottoms and edges of cookies are golden brown.
